Description This book argues that Latin America has a distinctive, enduring form of hierarchical capitalism characterized by multinational corporations, diversified business groups, low skills and segmented labor markets.
Over time, institutional complementarities knit features of corporate governance and labor markets together and thus contribute to institutional resiliency. Political systems generally favored elites and insiders who further reinforced existing institutions and complementarities. Hierarchical capitalism has not promoted rising productivity, good jobs or equitable development, and the efficacy of development strategies to promote these outcomes depends on tackling negative institutional complementarities. Review Text ' Review quote ' Students of development economics and others interested in the historical trajectory of the OECD economies will find this book rewarding. His theoretical approach, which focuses on risks, social insurance, and the development of human capital, manages to combine the strengths of power resources theory and its recent employer centered critics and thus to transcend that debate.
The book is a real tour de force and is must reading for all scholars interested in the political economy of the welfare state. It brings to light how much we still don't know about the welfare state and its effects and underpinnings despite its now lengthy history and the innumerable works devoted to understanding its nature. The book is also substantially interdisciplinary, truly a work of political economy in the fullest sense of that term. Iversen's research will make a major mark on the field and become the source of much debate and further scholarship.
It is lucid and highly accessible, not only to undergraduates but also to an interested public. It also combines the ambitious claim of theoretical integration between separate literatures with a series of sophisticated and sometimes highly innovative exercises in analytical modeling and statistical testing that should be of interest to graduate students specializing in institutional economics and comparative political institutions.

Rating details. Book ratings by Goodreads. Estevez-Abe develops an institutional, rational-choice model to solve this puzzle. She shows how Japan's electoral system generated incentives that led political actors to protect various groups that lost out in market competition. She explains how Japan's postwar welfare state relied upon various alternatives to orthodox social spending programs.
The initial postwar success of Japan's political economy has given way to periods of crisis and reform. This book follows this story up to the present day.
Capitalism, Democracy, and Welfare. Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics
Estevez-Abe shows how the current electoral system renders obsolete the old form of social protection. She argues that institutionally Japan now resembles Britain and predicts that Japan's welfare system will also come to resemble Britain's. Japan thus faces a more market-oriented society and less equality. Other books in this series. Add to basket. Ordering Power Dan Slater. Comparative Politics Mark Irving Lichbach.
